Would you support a government shut down if a budget deal is not reached?I cannot think of anything the government does I wish it did more of, so I personally would not blink at the idea.
The real issue is the public relations battle. I think the Republicans lost a lot of hearts and minds back in 1995 when the government shut down. but I seem to recall it was because Bill Clinton looked better than Newt Gingrich on the matter. I am not sure what barack Obama v. John Boehner would look like. One would think obama is the likelier to come out smelling like a rose. then again, when was the last time he got a poll bounce from anything?
I am going to go with make a budget deal to avoid a shut down. I like Paul Ryan’s plan to cut $ 6.2 trillion over the next decade, but I guarantee Senate Democrats will take turns pulling each others underwear out their rear exists. (Pity the poor guy who does the deed for Claire McCaskill.) A short shut down would probably favor republicans. They would look strong and frugal. Draw it out, though, and the media will remind everyone of government goodies they are missing out on, but the democrats would love to give them--paid for with confiscated tax dollars, of course.
What there needs to be is a fast compromise on fiscal sanity. Whatever gets us there is good in my book.
